Beat the Street

Beat the Street

During September and October 2018, Swindon was gripped by Beat the Street.  A fun, free game that transformed the town into a giant game, challenging people to see how far they could walk, cycle and run in just 6 weeks.

We ended with 31,892 people having played, travelling an amazing 313,353 miles between them!  Swindon is now the record holder for these achievements and will be the game that all others are measured against.

One of the biggest factors in contributing to these achievements was the way that schools got involved and supported the scheme.  98% of Primary Schools in Swindon that were invited to take part got involved in Beat the Street.  The winning schools travelled over 22,000 miles – the distance to Australia and back!

This wasn’t just a huge achievement in terms of the numbers of people taking part, but also in what we achieved.  Before the game, 45% of children reported being active, which increased to 60% post-game.  The proportion of people meeting national guidelines for physical activity increased from 62% to 76% and inactivity reduced from 24% to 13%.

It’s really important that we, together, build on this success.  WASP are here to support legacy programmes to ensure that the changes in physical activity are maintained. Whether it’s working with schools to broaden their offer, promoting clubs to new members or strengthening the volunteer workforce.  We are also working on community-wide free events and resources that encourage people to be more active, more often.
