Disability Sport

One of WASP’s key Values within our Strategy is: ‘Demonstrating and promoting Respect for the diversity in our sports community’ and one of our Strategic Objectives is to ‘Enable greater participation for all’.

WASP works with Local Authorities, School Sports Networks, Special Schools, National Governing Bodies, EFDS, National Disability Sports Organizations, Youth Sport Trust, local disability groups, local clubs and charities to ensure that sport and physical activity is available to people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities living in the county.

We provide a range of funded programme support and events to develop and promote opportunities for people with disabilities. For example, as part of the School Games programme we hold an annual Panathlon Event featuring Boccia, Polybat, New Age Kurling, Table Cricket and field Athletics. We have supported numerous clubs with Sportivate and Satellite Club funding to promote specialist clubs and inclusivity. Workforce support is provided in many ways including inclusive based courses and a coach bursary scheme. We also work with a range of partner organisations to promote opportunities and support both in sport and active recreation for disabled people.

We are always keen to develop further links with local clubs, groups and organizations who work directly with disabled people or who are keen to develop their offer for people with disabilities.

England Athletics has produced a short animation to help organisers to put on more inclusive running events. It guides viewers on how to provide a welcoming environment and making small and simple adjustments. If applied successfully, it will enable more disabled people to take part as well as improving the experience for all participants.

The animated video also suggests what information to provide, what considerations may be needed for specific impairment groups and how to improve physical access.The video supports an existing guidance document ‘Inclusive Guidance for Race and Event Providers’.
