Satellite Club award iPad as prize to Sheldon School student

 DSC0088The winner Abdullah al Rawshan who was pulled from the hat has been a regular attendee at the Sheldon School Satellite Badminton club and Terry and Mr Douglas were really pleased to present him with his prize in front of the group. He was really excited to be presented with an Ipad !

The Satellite Clubs intervention is a key part of Sport England’s Youth and Community Sport Strategy 2012-17, and aims to undertake transformational change in the way that young people are supported from school, college and other relevant settings into community sport – creating a sporting habit for life.

Sheldon School hold a Satellite Club after school from 3.15pm - 4.30pm every Monday. Terry Robinson is the coach that takes these sessions and he represents Aero Badminton club which is a community Badminton Club that play at the Sheldon School Sports Hall. Terry is the organiser and coach for the pupils of Sheldon school to be able to play badminton at this after school club. There they can develop and transition onto the community club when ready enabling the link to flourish between school and community hub club.

Mr Douglas the Head teacher at Sheldon school is really pleased they can host a Satellite Club on a Monday and is very grateful to Terry and Aero Badminton club for their involvement in making this possible. He is also grateful for the support from Satellite club funding through Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP).

WASP recently asked for the young people who attend all the Satellite clubs from across the Wiltshire and Swindon area to complete a national survey to find out how  they feel about the Satellite Club programme and what it has enabled them to do.

They had over 250 young people reply which is over 10% of the national responses which programme leader Simon Woodhouse was really pleased with.

Satellite Clubs are extensions, or outposts of community sports clubs which are established in a new venue, usually a secondary school, college, university or other suitable venue and specifically target the 11 to 25 age group. Satellite Clubs make it easy for young people to stay in sport, or indeed to start playing sport for the first time. They provide a stepping stone to a community club or regular participation.  They have a range of different objectives, determined by local need and insight, examples of which include:

  • Increasing the existing community club capacity due to high levels of demand;
  • Broadening the scope of what a club can offer to attract a wider range of young people to the club, and;
  • Focusing on opportunities for specific groups, such as disability sport or age/gender specific sessions.
