About Angling

AnglingAngling, or Fishing, is ever growing in popularity in England and everyone can get involved. The sport itself is generally relaxed and often held in tranquil settings, making it ideal for a relaxing activity to do both on your own or with friends and family. There are also various competitions held across the country, great for the more competitive angler!

Coarse Angling

This is the most popular type of angling in England and most people live within a few miles of a river, canal, lake or pond where they can catch coarse fish. The main techniques are float fishing, ledgering and spinning, and different rods are used for each technique.

Float fishing

This involves a float made of cork, quill, wood or plastic which lets the angler know when a fish takes the bait.

No float is used in ledgering; instead a weight is used to hold the bait on the bottom of the river or lake and bites from fish are indicated by the twitching of the rod tip, called a quiver tip.  Instead of using a reel, the line is attached to a short piece of elastic on the tip of the pole and when a fish takes the bait the pole is taken apart in pieces and then the fish is landed.Spinning is a technique used for predatory fish and uses a lure which is pulled through the water to imitate a small fish. Some expert anglers spend hundreds or even thousands of pounds on rods and reels, but you could buy everything you need to go fishing for less than £50!

Sea Angling

This is one of the largest participation sports in the UK. There are at least one million sea anglers of all ages, gender and ability, who fish from beaches, harbours, piers, and from boats both close to the shore and offshore over wrecks where marine life is plentiful.

Game Angling

This is a skilful sport which requires patience and practice. There are game fishing sites across the country both in the countryside and closer to cities. The Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA) represents the UK’s game anglers, fishery owners and affiliated trades, and has 15,000 individual and 85,000 club based members.
