It ran in Wiltshire for the first time last year and almost 50 girls took part in taster sessions with 40 enjoying it so much they took a coaching course.

Free girls’ taster sessions will be on offer at five clubs, followed by group coaching courses with PGA professionals, supported by young ambassadors from the county squads. The tasters will be held at:

  • golf 001Tidworth Garrison Golf club - 21 April – 11-1pm
  • High Post Golf club - 21 April – 10.30-12.30pm
  • Wrag Barn Golf club - 21 April – 2.30-4.30pm
  • Salisbury Golf Centre -21 April – 3.30-5.30pm
  • Broome Manor Golf club – 28 April – 2-4pm

Following the tasters, each club will each offer a five-week coaching course with PGA professionals. Then, the new players will be invited to a fun day with the ambassadors featuring multi-skills challenges and the chance to play on a golf course.

The support of the ambassadors, who encourage the newcomers, has helped to make the project such a success.

They include 11-year-old Ellie Webster from Wrag Barn Golf Club, who explains what she likes about golf: “When my dad played golf at the weekends, I always asked if I could go, but I was too young at the time. One day my mum found a free taster session at the local golf club which I went along to. I soon realised I really enjoyed it and continued with lessons. That’s when I really got into golf. It has allowed me to make lots of new friends and gain confidence along the way.”

Seona Mauchline, 17, from High Post Golf Club, adds her story: “I first tried golf at about age 10 when I went along to some sessions at a local driving range. I liked the challenge of an individual sport. From small competitions on a 9-hole course, I moved on to become a member at High Post, where I am currently junior captain - the club’s first female junior captain - and junior club champion. I now play for my club’s junior and ladies teams as well the county girls’ and ladies’ teams.”

Girls Golf Rocks is a national campaign, run jointly by England Golf and the Golf Foundation, and it aims to increase the number of girl golfers from an average of just two full members per club. U.S Kids also provide 7-irons for the girls to use.

This Girl Can Logo RGB BlackWhen Girls Golf Rocks ran in 15 counties last year over 850 girls had a go and more than 730 enjoyed it so much they went on to take coaching courses.
