Fairfield Farm College ‘Santa and Elf Dash'

DSC0013Fairfield Farm College held a ‘Santa/Elf Dash’ on Wednesday 6th December. WASP have been working with the college & so were invited along. Check out the pictures of this fun event!

Approximately 450 pupils and staff took part from across Wiltshire. All the students have additional needs. Snow stations were placed around the course, where the Sports Leaders threw flour snow balls at the participants who wanted to get messy!

Since September WASP have been supporting a group of 7 students from Fairfield Farm College to achieve their Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Qualification in Sports Leadership. The aim of the course is to give the participants the basic knowledge and confidence to be able to assist coaches and other sports professionals in planning, organising and delivering sessions. The project has been supported through WASP’s Coaching Plan for Wiltshire and Swindon. One of the key aims is to make Leadership, Coaching and Activator training available to all.

This is the first group from the College to take part in this course and WASP hope that it becomes and a self-sustaining and valuable part of the curriculum. The syllabus is set out below:

 DSC00341. Establishing Leadership Skill

  • Know the leadership opportunities available to them
  • Be able to take on the roles and responsibilities of an official in sport/physical activity
  • Be able to use leadership skills and behaviours effectively
  • Know the skills and behaviours needed to lead others

2. Plan, assist in leading and review sport/physical activity sessions

  • Know how to plan structured and inclusive sport/physical activity
  • Be able to plan structured and inclusive sport/physical activity
  • Know how to lead structured and inclusive sport/physical activity
  • Be able to assist in leading structured and inclusive sport/physical activity
  • Be able to review a sport/physical activity session

The leaders assisted staff in planning and shaping the course and then joined forces with Young Leaders from Lavington School to deliver the event.

DSC0040Their roles included escorting schools to the warm-up area, creating a sensory environment in the Winter Wonderland area for students with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, parachute games with snow and snow stations on the Lapland Challenge course. They then helped pack everything away.

This is one of the first of the Colleges leadership events. The qualification should be completed by June 2018 and judging by the faces in the pictures and the 'snowy' state Rik Grover from WASP was in, suggests it was a huge success! Rachel Bown from Fairfield Farm College who is tutoring the course said that the students “are loving organising and delivering.”

WASP are pleased and proud to have supported Fairfield Farm College by offering this course and hope it continues to be delivered at the college as well as being offered elsewhere within in Wiltshire.

Coaching Lead for WASP, Jordi Rose commented “this is the first time that WASP have been able to offer the Sports Leaders UK qualifications, we searched long and hard for the right course to be able to offer to young leaders in Wiltshire and the students at Fairfield Farm College. This course offers a qualification recognised across the globe and offers many different pathways for the leaders to progress onto.”

Thanks to Fairfield Farm College and Rachel Bown for inviting us, Rik Grover for braving the cold and the flour and of course to all the young leaders involved.
