Orienteering requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from various points in unfamiliar terrain, and attempting to move at speed. Participants are given a map which they use to find control points.
Orienteering combines various different sports and methods of travel including moving by foot, mountain bike, skiing, canoeing and horse riding.
Similar to Orienteering is the activity 'Geocaching' where participants use a GPS receiver and other navigational techniques to seek containers stored outdoors. Information on Geocaching can be found at The Geocaching Association of Great Britain website, www.gagb.co.uk.
The British Orienteering Federation is the National Governing Body for Orienteering in England, and was set up in 1967. The website for the British Orienteering Federation is www.britishorienteering.org.uk
