Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or 'shooting' a ball through a basketball hoop on the opposing teams end of the court while following a set of rules.
It is one of the world's most popular played and watched sports!
A regulation basketball hoop has a rim of 18 inches in diameter and is half 10 feet off of the ground on a backboard.
The team can score a field goal for two points by shooting the ball through the hoop during regular play if a player is touching or closer to the hoop than the three-point line. Three points can be scored if the player is outside the three-point line. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but overtime may be played when the game ends with a tie.
The ball can be advanced up the court by bouncing it while walking or running, known as dribbling, or passing it to teammates. It is a violation of the rules to walk with the ball, carry it or to double dribble; holding the ball and then resume dribbling.
